"Hi I’m Jessica moon and the mural I created for Streetwise is called "Rise up".

The majority of my art is responding to the current geological age of the Anthropocene, which is the time that we’re living in now where human activity has been the dominant influence on our climate and the environment. The rise up mural that I created is influenced by my smaller mixed media work which does incorporate a lot of collage elements. The wheatepaste here acts as a metaphor for the ephemerality of melting arctic ice which sustains many species including polar bears. I created this mural to bring awareness to the impacts of climate change that will not be born equally or fairly between rich and poor, women and men, older and younger generations- but also to raise awareness for climate justice which looks at a climate crisis through human rights lens. I believe that by working together we can create a better future for present and future generations. Through my work I hope to inspire and remind audiences of what we have, as well as what we stand to lose if we do not take action."

"Using different artistic mediums to raise awareness about our planet's environmental challenges has become the focus of my work.

Climate change, the waste stream, and endangered species are various subjects that influence my work and are expressed in my art. I believe the human impact on our planet's environment is one of the most pressing issues of our time and one which often invokes a sense of powerlessness. I aim to confront these overwhelming concerns through my art practice, addressing issues that our society tends to neglect or deny.

I have worked with a wide variety of materials including discarded plastic bags, punctured bicycle inner tubes, paint, collage and melting ice. Through my work I hope to inspire and remind audiences of what we have as well as what we stand to lose if we do not take action.

I was born in Ohio, spent a few years living and working in Mongolia, and I now reside in Colorado which I have called home 30 years. My studio and home are located in the mountains west of Boulder, Colorado. When I am not teaching art or making art I spend my time adventuring in the outdoors and traveling around the globe."
