Zoelie Saez and Abram Aleo collaborated on a comic-book-style mural that signifies the interconnectedness of all humanity and nature for Street Wise 2022.
Across four black-and-white panels, “We All Grow From the Same Tree” illustrates the growth of new life from a towering tree. Glowing green seeds fall from the tree and into the ground, where they germinate and grow roots. The final panel reveals the sprouting of new life with the anthropomorphized seeds springing up from the ground.
Inspired by the introduction of augmented reality in this year’s festival, Zoelie and Abram decided to design their mural as a comic book to convey motion and tell a story. Using @artiviveapp, the artists activated the mural in augmented reality. The AR layer reveals the title of the mural in a graffiti-style font and the same glowing green color as the seeds. The words hop around and move about playfully.
The artists approached designing the mural with a collaborative spirit, passing the drawing back and forth and moving from thumbnail sketches to drawings on an iPad to the final design phase. Neither Zoelie nor Abram had worked in AR before, but they were able to learn how to use @artiviveapp and create an AR layer during the week of Street Wise.
Zoelie and Abram intend for their mural to express unity and community. It is a reminder that everyone grows from the same tree. This tree bestows in each of us the same life force, which is full of pure love.
